TRAVERTINE
DESCRIPTION

Travertine is a sedimentary rock. It is a natural chemical precipitate of carbonate minerals, which is deposited from the water of mineral springs (especially hot springs) or streams saturated with calcium carbonate.
The name travertine derives from the name of town Tivoli in Italy, near Rome, where extensive deposits of travertine exist.

What colors does travertine come in?
Pure Travertine is white but comes in many different colors including ivory, beige, walnut, and gold which are the result of iron compounds or other organic impurities.
Travertine quarried at Movsisyan Ltd. quarry comes in a variety of colors: beige, brown, dark-brown, amber, orange, melon-colored, tiger-striped, black and terracotta.

What are the characteristics of travertine?
Travertine is a low density stone with a sponge-like texture that is easy to work with. Due to it’s low density, travertine constructions are light-weight.

Travertine can be effectively polished to a smooth, shiny finish. When polished, travertine comes in a variety of colors from gray to coral-red.

Where is Travertine Used?
Travertine has been used in the construction of buildings for thousands of years and is still one of the most frequently used stones in modern architecture. Common uses include: facade material, wall cladding, flooring, and occasionally ceilings. It is also used as cladding in showers and counter tops. Travertine can also be used for decorative architectural elements.
